We toured the Cold Climate Housing Research Center in Fairbanks. They are affiliated with UAF, and do research on what modifications should be done on housing in cold climates. I never thought about it, but it made sense--you can't build the same kind of house in Texas for weather that gets 40 degrees below zero.
